Waiting until your furnace is no longer working in order to have it repaired can be a costly and inconvenient approach to furnace repair. After all, if you find yourself without heat during the cold winter months, you will likely need to cover the cost of both lodging and emergency furnace repairs in order to avoid spending an extended period of time in the extreme cold. Thankfully, it is often possible to avoid this situation by learning to spot problems with your furnace before it stops working. In this article, you can learn more about three of the most common signs that your furnace is in need of repair.

#1: Your Furnace Is Frequently Cycling On And Off

If your furnace is working properly, it should heat your home relatively quickly and then cycle off. While your furnace will need to cycle back on from time to time in order to maintain the temperature in your home, it should not need to do so on a frequent basis. If you notice that your furnace is turning on and off on a more frequent basis than usual, take a moment to ask yourself these three questions.

  • Is it exceptionally cold outside?
  • Have you changed your desired temperature?
  • Is there a window or door open allowing cold air into your home?

If you answer no to all three of these questions, the increased cycling could be a sign that your furnace is struggling and needs to be repaired.

#2: Your Furnace Has Become Increasingly Noisy

Even the quietest furnaces will still make some noise. However, your furnace should not become louder simply because it becomes older. If you notice that your furnace has become increasingly noisy, you should know that this often indicates the need for furnace repairs. Rattling, shaking, and grinding sounds can be especially concerning since these sounds often point to an issue with the mechanical aspects of your furnace.

#3: You See A Sudden Spike In Your Energy Bills

There are many different reasons that your energy bills may fluctuate from one month to the next. For instance, if your area has been experiencing colder than usual temperatures, you may see an increase in your energy bills as you are required to run your heating system more frequently. However, increases in your energy bills can also indicate the need for a furnace repair. If you cannot easily pinpoint the reason for the increase in your energy costs, it is a good idea to have your furnace inspected by an HVAC contractor in order to get to the root of the problem.
